Booze clues

Has anyone done Nutrisystem?

I was about this morning. I'll take an official weight before I start NutriSystem. I'm thinking about this new diet program way too much. Last night I dreamed about it. I dreamed I got my order. It came in a small box, rectangular, and fairly flat only a few inches thick. All my food was in there and fit because the portions were so small. Tomorrow is shopping day and I see some encouraging things. I could be wrong, but it looks like I can have unlimited lettuce of all types. I'm going to buy that salad spritzer dressing that is one calorie a spray.

Cucumbers and celery are also unlimited, as it raw spinach but not cooked I need to buy non-fat cheese, both for the turkey and beef burgers on the program, and to make my cauliflower potatoes out of. Also non-fat cream cheese. I think I will buy one of those bags of broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots. A huge bag is only calories and 12g carbs.

Tomatoes are okay and listed as a vegetable - 1 medium tomato is one serving. I won't buy any fruit of course, except for my Saturday treat of berries. I'll sub in an extra serving of veggies or protein in place of the fruit.

I'm not clear on how to count the Quaker oats I have. I posted that question to the board. Here's how to figure it: From posts of info received directly from NS counselors: You can add free foods to your meal plan So the oatmeal would be approximately one fruit plus one low-GI carb, and the soy milk would be one dairy serving, except the kind I use is of course lower in carbs than the type they allow. I don't need the sugar.

So I may be able to have a bowl of oatmeal before hitting the gym sometimes. A protein serving of turkey or chicken is 1 oz. One egg or three egg whites are also considered one protein serving.

They lump dairy and protein together. But like I said, I can sub a serving in for the carb servings of which there are more than enough. Is the milk in the cereal counted as the dairy serving for that meal? The 4 ounces of milk you add to your cereal or pancakes does NOT count as part of your dairy serving at breakfast; the addition of the milk is simply considered part of the entrée itself.

Therefore, if you're having cereal or pancakes, you would still need to add a separate, full dairy serving s , just as you would with any other breakfast entrée, per your meal plan. There are a few entrees that indicate on the package "serve with a whole-grain roll.

You should choose any roll that has up to calories; whole-grain is preferable. Is coffee allowed on the program? Yes, coffee is an unlimited beverage on the NutriSystem program. You may use artificial sweeteners and preferably a non-dairy creamer that has less than 20 calories per serving. Can I have alcoholic drinks on the diet? We do not encourage individuals to consume alcohol on the NutriSystem program; however, we do understand that many people drink occasionally for social reasons.

If you do choose to consume alcoholic beverages, we recommend that they be consumed just occasionally and in moderate amounts. Alcohol provides no nourishment, can leave you feeling dehydrated, and adds calories which may affect your weight loss. But if you choose to drink, here are some recommendations: Avoid drinks like daiquiris calories , margaritas calories , wine coolers calories , sweet wines calories , and mixed drinks. Use diet and sugar-free mixers such as diet soda, club soda or diet tonic water.

Drink water while you are drinking alcohol to keep you hydrated. Choose wines that are of a dry variety. Is it ok to use canned vegetables and fruit? Due to their sodium content, we do not recommend that you use canned vegetables. But if you do choose to have canned vegetables, rinse them well to remove as much sodium as possible.

For fruit, fresh is the best choice. Be careful when choosing canned fruit, and only choose items that have been canned in their natural juice or water, rather than heavy syrup that has added sugar.

Why are some of the vegetables limited on the regular vegetable list and unlimited on the salad vegetable list? The salad vegetables are eaten raw and because they are so low in calories, we do not feel that it is necessary to limit them to a specific amount. There is a natural limit to how many raw vegetables anyone can eat at one time. When the vegetables are cooked, however, they do condense, so you are getting more in a cup of cooked vegetables than in a cup of raw vegetables.

In addition, if you order a pint of beer 16 oz , you'll get four extra ounces than one standard drink, and then there are mixed drinks that contain more than one shot like those illustrious Long Island Iced Teas!

That means not only more alcohol calories than you counted on, but also a loosier goosier state of mind than may seriously affect your appetite. Slim down your drink order If you're a beer drinker, the type you order can have a big impact on your nutritional bottom line. A bottle or can of ultra low carb beer contains about grams of carbs. But a regular version packs at least 10 grams, about as much as 10 mini pretzels.

That means three a week adds up to an extra 1, grams of carb per year, the equivalent of nearly five loaves of bread. Drinks made with mixers are even bigger carb and calorie traps. Just four ounces a half cup , of a sweetened mixer will cost you a whopping 25 grams of carb about 14 gummy bears worth , and decadent drinks like a mudslide can contain over calories, more than the amount a slice of chocolate cake.

Slow your pace One of the biggest culprits in alcohol-driven overeating is getting too tipsy, too fast. To slow down the rise in your blood alcohol level, order a tall glass of water with every alcoholic drink.

Alternate sips, and be sure to finish at least 12 ounces of H2O for every cocktail. This simple strategy may cut your total consumption in half. Prevent mindless munching If you're at a bar with free happy hour apps, or one that serves up goodies, like popcorn or nuts, turn your back on the free fare, or place them out of arm's reach. Research shows you'll mindlessly munch if food is right in front of you, without even realizing it, and even if you aren't hungry.

But if it's out of sight, you're much less likely to seek it out. Pre-plan your post-drink meal Alcohol can indeed act as an appetite stimulant. And we all know it lowers inhibitions.

So if you don't want to give in to eating things you wouldn't touch if you were sober, create a pre-drinking strategy. Stash something in your bag, like an all natural energy bar, so you won't grab a greasy slice of pizza.

Eat before you drink
